It’s just a few days until the Christmas Day, which means lots of preparations. And shopping! Well to help plan your Christmas break, Woolworths and Coles have released their trading hours for this year’s festive period, with all their store closures across every state.

Here’s your guide to what’s open over New Year’s Day.
The laws vary by state and territory but in most cases New Year’s Day is not a restricted trading day, meaning large retailers including supermarkets, shopping centres, department stores and car yards are free to trade as normal.
New Year’s Day is not a restricted shop trading day in NSW and Victoria, and the ACT and the Northern Territory do not regulate shop trading hours.
In Queensland trading hours over the holiday period vary depending on which part of the state you’re in, with different rules for tourist areas and seaside resorts.
This year Western Australia has extended trading hours, with most shops able to open from 8am to 6pm including on the New Year’s Day public holidays.
In South Australia there will be extended trading hours over the holidays, while in Tasmania it will be largely business as usual.
HOTELS, BARS AND PUBS
Trading hours for hotels, bars, pubs and clubs vary wildly by state and territory, not to mention individual venue and license type.
For New Year’s Eve, most states and territories naturally have extended trading hours, generally until 2am.
Coles Opening Hours
SUPERMARKETS
All Woolworths stores will be open New Year’s Day in NSW, except Smithfield.
In Victoria, all stores will be open on New Year’s Day except Croydon North, Surrey Hills, Knox and Coburg.
In Queensland, all stores will be open on New Year’s Day except regional stores in Mt Isa, Goondiwindi and Ayr.
In Western Australia, all CBD and metropolitan stores will be open on New Year’s Day, except Narrogin. Select regional stores will be open on the public holidays.
In South Australia, on New Year’s Day, CBD stores will be open from 11am to 5pm, metropolitan stores will be closed and select regional stores will be open.
In Tasmania, ACT and Northern Territory, all stores will be open on New Year’s Day.
All Aldi stores will be open on New Year’s Eve. On New Year’s Day, all stores in Queensland, NSW, ACT, Victoria and Western Australia will be open except Liverpool Central in NSW, Northam in Western Australia, Brimbank and Caroline Springs in Victoria.
Most stores in South Australia will be closed on New Year’s Day, except for Berri, Kadina, Mt Barker, Murray Bridge, Nuriootpa, Port Pirie and Victor Harbor.
LIQUOR
All Coles Liquor stores including Vintage Cellars, Liquorland, First Choice and Liquor Market will be open on New Year’s Day in every state and territory except South Australia, where some metro stores will be closed.
All Woolworths Liquor stores including BWS and Dan Murphy’s will be open on New Year’s Day.
DEPARTMENT STORES
Most Myer stores will offer reduced trading hours for New Year’s Day, with select stores open from 10am to 4pm.
David Jones stores are open from 11am-7pm on New Year’s Day.
CINEMAS
Movies opening over Christmas and New Year include Bumblebee, Spider-Man: Into the Spider Verse, Once Upon A Deadpool, Aquaman, Ralph Breaks The Internet, Holmes & Watson, VICE, The Favourite, Mary Poppins Returns and How To Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World.

All Event Cinemas will be open as normal over the holiday period.
They include George Street, Kotara, Bondi Junction, Burwood, Hurstville, Macquarie, Liverpool and Top Ryde in NSW, Chermside, Pacific Fair and Garden City in Queensland, Innaloo in Western Australia and Marion in South Australia.
All Hoyts locations will also be open as normal.
They include Blacktown, Broadway, Penrith, Wetherill Park, Bankstown, Eastgardens, Warrawong, Charlestown, Chatswood Westfield, Erina and Warringah Mall in NSW, Melbourne Central, Northland, Highpoint, Broadmeadows, Forest Hill, Eastland, Chadstone and Greensborough in Victoria, Sunnybank, Tweed, Redcliffe and Stafford in Queensland, Carousel in Western Australia, Norwood and Tea Tree Plaza in South Australia and Woden in ACT.
